ASUU seeks bill to prohibit foreign education for children of top officials – Nexus News

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has solicited for a bill to dictate how children of public officers enroll in schools outside the country.
This call was made by Kingdom Tombra, Chairman of the University of Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island chapter of the union, at the solidarity protest organized by the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, in Yenagoa.
Recall, ASUU commenced its strike on February 14, 2022, before the Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Educational Institutions (NASU) National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) joined.
The common demand the unions want the government to address before they could return to class are salaries and other entitlements.
Despite negotiations and interventions by disturbed citizens, the FG and the ASUU are yet to settle their rift after nearly 6 months.
Kingdom Tombra speaking during the protest said; “If this is done, it will build a better society by developing formidable educational institutions and improving funding of the university system in Nigeria.
“This struggle is not against the government, but about the working class and against the ruling class and we are very committed to it.

“If the rich and poor go to the same university or institution, I don’t think the strike will occur again.
“If they school here and their children are here they will show total support for the university system and the tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” he said.
Earlier speaking, John Ndiomu, the NLC Chairman in Bayelsa implored the federal government to approve the renegotiated draft agreement between it and ASUU.
“Adopt University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) in place IPPIS, Pay Earned Academic Allowances (EAA)
“Release of Revitalization Fund, Release white paper on visitation to Federal Universities. Amend NUC law to control proliferation of state universities without funding,” the labor leader said.
