Ex-kickboxer and social media influencer Andrew Tate, known for his controversial and sexist views, has been arrested in Bucharest, Romania on suspicion of human trafficking, rape, and forming an organized crime group.
Tate, 36, and his younger brother Tristan, 34, were taken into custody along with two other suspects after a raid on their luxury villa on Thursday. The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) is investigating the siblings in connection with the alleged formation of a criminal group that used girls in adult videos.
This is not the first time the Tates have faced investigation. In April, police reportedly discovered two girls who claimed they were being held against their will at the brothers’ residence.
The Tates were released while the investigation continued, but were detained again on Thursday in connection with the current investigation into human trafficking, rape, and organized crime. Romanian prosecutors have stated that the Tates and two unnamed individuals “appeared to have created an organized crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing, and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content.”
Andrew Tate gained notoriety earlier this year for his offensive and misogynistic views and was banned from social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. His Twitter account was restored after Elon Musk’s takeover of the company and Tate immediately resumed posting.
Most recently, he engaged in a public spat with climate activist Greta Thunberg, boasting about his supercar collection and asking for Thunberg’s email address to “send a complete list of my car collection and their respective enormous emissions.” Thunberg responded with a tweet that has since become one of the most-liked in history, stating, “Yes, please do enlighten me. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.”
In addition to his kickboxing career, Tate has been linked with boxing fights with YouTube personalities Jake and Logan Paul, as well as with their fellow social media star KSI. He also appeared briefly on Celebrity Big Brother before being removed from the show due to footage that emerged of him allegedly beating a woman. The woman later claimed that her relationship with Tate was consensual.
